Petrified wood can take literally hundreds of millions of years to form, going back over 360 million years in time. The process occurs when wood that has been buried in volcanic ash or mud is slowly mineralized, where the cells of the fibrous wood pulp are replaced with minerals. Most of these minerals are hard silica minerals that turn into what we know as jaspers, but there are occasionally pockets of calcite and pyrite.
